How much does a day cost? Daily budget by city

Affordability is the question that decides a lot of trips, so here is a straight answer for each city: roughly what you will spend per person per day, both on a tight budget and at a comfortable mid-range pace. Figures are approximate euro-equivalents and exclude international flights, which sit on top.

Accommodation is almost always the biggest swing, followed by how you eat. The cheapest cities here can be done for well under half the cost of the priciest, and a few easy moves (free museum days, the tap water, a transit pass, the occasional picnic) cut the bill further. Use the tier as the reliable comparison and the numbers as a guide.

Trip budgets: quick answers

Among these, Istanbul is the best value, followed by the central-European capitals (Budapest, Prague) and Portugal’s cities (Porto, Lisbon) and Athens. A careful traveler can do these for roughly half the daily cost of New York, London or Paris.

New York is the priciest in this guide, with London, Paris, Amsterdam, Venice and Dubai not far behind. Accommodation is the main driver in all of them, so when and where you book your room makes the biggest difference.

They are approximate per-person, per-day euro-equivalents covering accommodation (a hostel bed for the budget figure, a share of a mid-range hotel for the comfortable one), food, local transport and a sight or activity. They exclude international flights and big one-off splurges.

Accommodation first: book early, go slightly out of the centre, or travel in the shoulder season. Then food: eat where locals do and picnic from markets and bakeries. Free museum days, free sights, the tap water and a transit pass all add up, and our other guides cover each.

No. These daily budgets are on-the-ground costs only. International airfare sits on top and varies enormously with route, season and how far ahead you book, so treat it as a separate line in your planning.

Figures are our approximate per-person daily estimates (excluding international flights), cross-checked against cost-of-living data linked under each city. Travel costs move with the season, the year and exchange rates, so treat the tier as the durable comparison and the numbers as a planning guide rather than a quote. Last updated June 12, 2026.
