Best time to visit: when to go, city by city
The "best" time to visit a city is usually a balance of decent weather, thinner crowds and saner prices, and for most of the destinations here that points to the shoulder seasons rather than peak summer. Spring and early autumn tend to give you the warm-but-not-scorching days and shorter queues that make a city trip pleasant.
There are exceptions worth knowing: Dubai is a winter destination because its summer is brutal, Tokyo’s headline season is cherry blossom, and a few places shine in the run-up to Christmas. Here is the sweet spot for each city, and the stretch to avoid.

Plan things to do in MilanWhen to go: quick answers
Generally winter (excluding the Christmas-and-New-Year peak), when flights and hotels are cheapest and crowds thinnest. The trade-off is cold, short days. The shoulder seasons (spring and early autumn) balance lower prices with much better weather.
Not bad, but often the least comfortable: July and August bring the highest heat, crowds and prices across most of Europe, and in mid-August parts of Italy, Spain and France partly shut down for local holidays. Dubai’s summer is genuinely extreme.
Between November and March. Dubai’s summer (around June to September) is extremely hot and humid, often above 40°C, so the cooler winter months are when the beaches, terraces and outdoor events come alive.
Usually from late March into early April, though the exact peak shifts by a week or two each year with the weather and is forecast in advance. It is stunning but very popular, so accommodation books up early.
The shoulder seasons are the months either side of peak summer, roughly April to June and September to October in Europe. They offer warm-but-not-scorching weather, smaller crowds at major sights, and lower prices, which is why they are the sweet spot for most city trips.
Recommendations weigh long-run climate norms, crowd patterns and prices, cross-checked against official city tourism sources linked under each city. Weather in any given year varies, and shoulder-season timing shifts a little with the climate, so treat the windows as a reliable guide rather than a guarantee. Last updated June 12, 2026.
