Petrin Tower vs Old Town Hall Tower: which Prague view to climb?

For the widest, calmest panorama, climb Petrin. For a tight, dramatic look straight down onto Old Town Square and the spires, the Old Town Hall Tower is the one to do.

These are the two viewpoints most travelers actually choose between, and they give you opposite things. Petrin is a small Eiffel-style tower on a forested hill above the river, so you are already high before you start climbing. The Old Town Hall Tower is the one attached to the Astronomical Clock, right in the middle of the medieval core.

Think about what you want to look at. Petrin is the whole-city, see-Bohemia-on-a-clear-day view from above the green hill. The Town Hall Tower is the close-up: Tyn Church spires, the square below, the rooftops of the Old Town packed in around you.

The view Huge panorama over the entire city and beyond. You look down on the Castle from across the river. Charles Bridge and the square are far off, too distant for a close photo. Bird's-eye view straight down onto Old Town Square, with the Tyn Church and St. Nicholas spires right in front of you.
Crowds Usually quiet up top. The hill and the funicular spread people out. Queues build from mid-morning, especially in summer, because it shares the entrance with the clock crowd.
Getting up Funicular up Petrin Hill (or a walk through the park), then 299 steps to the top. No elevator on the standard climb. Has an elevator. It is the only wheelchair-accessible tower in the center, and the climb itself is short.
How long it takes Half a morning if you include the hill, the park, and the funicular. It is an outing, not a quick stop. Quick. You are in the middle of the Old Town already, so it slots into a walking day in 30 to 45 minutes.
Best light Great at sunset for the wide view, and the hill park is pleasant beforehand. Golden hour over the red rooftops of the square is the money shot.
Pair it with The rose gardens, the mirror maze, and the walk down toward the Lesser Town. The Astronomical Clock show, Old Town Square cafes, and Charles Bridge a few minutes away.
The verdict

If you only climb one and you want the postcard of Old Town Square with the spires, do the Old Town Hall Tower, just go early or late to skip the line. If you want the biggest view in Prague and a half-day on a green hill away from the crush, Petrin is the better experience and it is rarely crowded at the top.

FAQs

It is 299 steps with open metalwork, so it can feel exposed. If stairs or heights are a problem, the Old Town Hall Tower is the friendlier choice: it has an elevator and a shorter, enclosed climb.

Not closely. Petrin is set back on the hill, so the bridge and the square read as part of a wide cityscape rather than a tight shot. For a close frame of the square and spires, the Old Town Hall Tower is much better placed.

Take the funicular from Ujezd up the hill (it runs on a standard transit ticket), or walk up through the park. Then it is the stair climb to the top of the tower itself. Budget half a morning if you want to enjoy the hill too.

Petrin, almost always. The hill spreads people out and the top rarely feels packed. The Old Town Hall Tower sits on the busiest square in the city and builds a queue from mid-morning, so go early or in the evening.

Usually not. For the Old Town Hall Tower in peak summer, going early in the day or late afternoon avoids the worst of the line. Petrin rarely needs booking; you mostly just wait for the funicular or walk up.
