Perge vs Aspendos: which ancient site near Antalya should you pick

Pick Perge if you want the better ancient-city visit from Antalya. Pick Aspendos if one superb Roman theatre is enough to justify a clunkier trip.

This is the choice many Antalya visitors end up making. Both are east of the city, both are tied to Roman Pamphylia, and day tours often put them together. If you only have half a day, I do not think they are equal.

Perge is the one I would send most people to first. It gives you streets, gates, baths, an agora, fountains, a stadium area and theatre remains, so you can read it as a city. Aspendos hits harder in one place, the theatre, but the rest of the visit needs more patience.

Perge Archaeological SiteAspendos Archaeological Site
Best first pick Perge. It is more varied, easier to pace, and less dependent on one monument doing all the work. Aspendos, but only if your main goal is seeing a Roman theatre in unusually complete shape.
Getting there from Antalya Easier. Perge is in Aksu, about 17 to 18 km east of central Antalya. The AntRay T1 line toward Aksu or Expo gets you close, then you finish with a walk, taxi, or local ride depending on where you get off. More work. Aspendos is near Belkis in the Serik district, roughly 40 to 50 km east of Antalya depending on where you measure from. Without a car, expect an Antalya to Serik leg, then a taxi or local minibus connection to the site.
What you actually see A spread-out ruined city: colonnaded streets, gates, baths, agora, fountains, a stadium area and theatre remains. The pleasure is in moving through the plan of the place. The theatre is the reason to go. The aqueduct and acropolis ruins, including remains such as the basilica, nymphaeum, market building and odeion area, add context, but they do not beat Perge for wandering.
Heat and effort More exposed walking. Go early in hot months, bring water, and do not count on much shade once you are inside the site. Less walking if you only see the theatre. More effort if you add the acropolis and aqueduct, especially in summer heat.
Best for photos Better for slow detail: stone streets, columns, gates, long sightlines and ruined urban spaces. Better for one big image. The theatre interior is the shot.
Best with kids or reluctant history people Perge is better if they like roaming and finding the next bit as they go. It can still drag in summer because the site is open and spread out. Aspendos is better if attention spans are short. You can see the main reason for coming fairly quickly.
Pairing with other stops Pairs logically with Antalya Museum because major Perge finds have been displayed there, but check the museum status before planning around it. Antalya Museum has been closed during its rebuild, with reopening expected around the end of 2026. Pairs well with Perge or Side on a full-day route, especially by car, driver, or tour. As a solo public-transport trip from Antalya, it can feel like a lot of moving around for one main sight.
The verdict

Perge wins for most travelers. Aspendos has the better single monument, but Perge is the smarter pick if you want one ancient site that feels like a proper visit rather than a theatre stop with extras.

Pick Perge Archaeological Site if

  • You have one open morning or afternoon and want the strongest overall ruins experience near Antalya.
  • You are using public transport and do not want to deal with the Serik connection.

Pick Aspendos Archaeological Site if

  • You specifically want to see the Aspendos theatre and are fine with the day being built around that one payoff.
  • You have a car, driver, or tour, and can combine Aspendos with Perge or Side instead of making it a standalone outing.

FAQs

Yes, and that is usually the better way to handle Aspendos if you have a full day. Start early. Perge takes time, and Aspendos is less forgiving if you are piecing the trip together by public transport.

Perge. The AntRay T1 route toward Aksu or Expo gets you close enough to finish with a walk, taxi, or local ride. Aspendos is possible without a car, but it usually means getting to Serik first and then sorting out the last leg.

Perge, if the museum is open when you travel. Many important Perge sculptures and finds have been displayed there, so the ruins make more sense after seeing that material. Check the museum status first because it has been closed during a rebuild.

No. The theatre is genuinely worth seeing. The mistake is expecting Aspendos to feel like a full ancient city visit on the same level as Perge. Go for the theatre, add the aqueduct and acropolis if you have time, and keep the day honest.
