Pick Bodrum Castle if you only have time for one. The Mausoleum has the louder name in ancient history, but the castle gives you more to look at, better views, and a stronger sense of Bodrum in a single visit.

This is the real Bodrum tradeoff: the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus matters more in a history book than it does on the ground. The original tomb is gone, and the site is mostly foundations, stone pieces, signs, and reconstruction material. I like it, but I would not send an unprepared first-timer there first.

Bodrum Castle is the easier win. You get the fort, the harbour setting, towers, courtyards, and the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology within the castle complex. It feels like a full visit, not a stop that needs a long explanation before it starts.

Best first pick Bodrum Castle. It is the one I would send a first-time visitor to with very little hesitation. The Mausoleum is better as a second stop, especially if you already care about ancient Halicarnassus.

Best pairing Pair it with Bodrum Harbour before or after, then walk into town. Pair it with Bodrum Ancient Theater or Myndos Gate if you want a Halicarnassus-focused half day.
