Monastery of Panagia Tourliani
Panagia Tourliani is the main reason most travelers head inland to Ano Mera. It is a short visit, but the carved wooden screen, marble bell tower, and the village square around it give you a sharper read on Mykonos than another hour wandering Chora's lanes.

Worth it if you want a more grounded Mykonos stop away from Chora. It is small, so do not talk yourself into treating it as a half-day attraction on its own.
Worth it for
- Travelers drawn to churches, icons, and Cycladic village life
- Anyone building an east Mykonos route around Ano Mera and the nearby beaches
You can skip if
- You have very little time and have not seen Mykonos Town yet
- You would rather skip short cultural stops with uncertain opening hours

Why it matters
The monastery was founded in 1542 on the site of an older church and took much of its present look after later renovations. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and ties into the island's religious calendar, especially around the August 15 feast and the days after it.
This is a working Greek Orthodox monastery, not a staged attraction. So the visit that pays off is a quiet, respectful one: look at the craftsmanship, step into the church if it is open, then give yourself time in Ano Mera's square instead of treating the place as a quick photo stop. Dress modestly, since it is an active place of worship.
What you will see
The piece everyone points to is the carved wooden screen (the iconostasis) inside the church, often called Florentine in style, along with the bishop's throne and pulpit. The marble bell tower and the fountain in the courtyard are worth slowing down for too, especially if you have a soft spot for Cycladic stonework.
There is a small collection of religious objects, vestments, icons, and older monastery items when that part is open. Do not plan your whole day around it, since access can shift with services, the season, and whoever is on hand.
The Ano Mera tradeoff
Ano Mera sits about 7 to 8 km from Mykonos Town, so getting there takes a bit of effort compared with the churches you can reach on foot in Chora. The payoff is a calmer side of the island: tavernas, a real square, and none of the cruise-ship crush.
The catch is timing. In July and August the midday sun makes the square feel harsh, and the bus does not run as often as the beach lines. Aim for earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon if you can swing it.
How to fit it in
Pair it with Kalafatis, Kalo Livadi, or Elia if you are spending the day on the east-side beaches. It also slots neatly into a half-day drive that strings together Ano Mera, a beach, and a viewpoint over the dry interior.
If you only have a few hours on Mykonos and have never seen Chora, do Chora first. Panagia Tourliani is for travelers who want the island beyond Little Venice, the windmills, and the shopping streets.
